Watching Romantic Comedies Can Strengthen A Marriage

New research gives reason to drag a spouse to watch romcom. How many times have there been complaints: "These films are unrealistic - they create distorted ideas about love!" It is easy to assume that romantic movies create inadequate expectations in relationships. Whether we envy the characters or despise them, are these films really so negative?

According to a number of studies, the answer is: not at all - rather, they are beneficial. It is generally believed that the rom-com genre creates inadequate relationship expectations among women, but a University of Illinois study found this to be a misconception - both sexes are affected equally by the films.

Another stereotype: these films idealize relationships. Research has dispelled this myth - 52 of the most popular rom-coms present mainly the idea that relationships require a lot of dedication.

Ironically, another study from the University of Rocher demonstrates that watching rom-coms can be helpful in improving your married relationship. Scientists argue that discussing five films a month halves the risk of divorce for young married couples (up to 3 years of marriage).

One of the study's lead authors, Ronald Rogge, a professor of psychology, says: “The results show that husbands and wives already understand pretty well what they are doing right or wrong in relationships. It is enough just to make them want to think about their behavior."

All this just confirms that romantic comedies can be an effective tool in relationships. Watching them encourages emotional experiences and analysis of their own behavior in a couple, and does not impose erroneous views. Romcoms cause laughter, tears, and can be considered as a therapy - enough reason to spend an evening in front of the screen together!
