What the experience of ancestors says
Let's remember what folk wisdom says about the connection between the body and the psyche:
- In a healthy body healthy mind.
- The soul is gone.
- Soul wide open.
- Lose one's temper.
- To see through.
- You will be healthy - you will get everything.
- Live with reason, and no healers are needed.
- Strong in body, rich in deeds.
Undoubtedly, the connection between the health of body and mind was evident even in the old days, even before people invented psychoanalysis and the science of psychology itself. Did they then heal the body through the soul or the soul through the body? Undoubtedly, one of the methods was and is the system of posts adopted in the church charter. They say that if you follow all of them, your health will be excellent and your state of mind will also be all right.
Fasting is not only a religious component, it is a wise, purposeful and planned influence on the general state of a person, both spiritual and physical. This was especially useful when medicine was still far from today's level. The priests, who were often engaged in healing, could lead the way of life of people and, as a result, the state of their health. Please note that fasts are found in almost all world religions and they are always associated with a special demeanor, special prayers. This is a very fine tuning of the body!
In Eastern culture, body therapy is present to an even greater extent - yoga, wushu and similar practices are aimed at simultaneously working with both the soul and the body, without breaking them.
Thus, the fact that for the health of the psyche it is necessary to pay due attention to the body is absolutely not a new idea.
How does body therapy work2
Each of us can easily feel the connection of internal problems with the body. Who does not know the feeling of "how a mountain falls from his shoulders" when he finally manages to complete a difficult task or get rid of a lot of responsibility or how you can "breathe deeply" in a similar situation. And what about the feeling when your “breath froze” from intense excitement?
Body therapy works "by contradiction", by means of massage, painful or forceful action, creating the necessary reaction of the body, which entails the disclosure of a particular problem or the removal of any block. For example, by massaging or squeezing the shoulders, you can feel the psychological burden that does not allow a person to feel free and happy and oppresses him. Since the load can literally be groped, then there must be a way to drop it.
A good body therapy specialist can identify a psychological problem based on signals from the body, often combining treatment with classical psychoanalysis. The body is generally very sensitive to internal problems, sometimes more sensitive than the mind of its own person. It is used in a wide variety of fields from medicine to business negotiations.
Many books have been written about the signals that the body gives, depending on the thoughts. There are specialists who are present at serious negotiations only to tell their management what potential partners thought about during the discussion of certain issues. They read this information only from body movements!
But back to health. Mood and behavior cues often give away health problems long before they show symptoms. There is a whole branch of psychology that studies this relationship - psychosomatics. If we again turn to history and folk wisdom, then the examples are even brighter:
- He’s sitting in my liver - they talk about someone who’s bored so much that when he appears, the liver starts to play pranks.
- A bilious person is about someone who has a difficult character, all the time trying to pry, say nasty things. In fact, problems with the gallbladder make a person just like that, the disease is painful and does not add a good mood to anyone.
- The toad strangles - they say when they are greedy. However, there is a very real disease "angina pectoris", the symptoms are somewhat similar.
- I smell it in my heart;
- The heart is restless. The heart is generally an amazing organ. Human life depends on it. And it really starts to hurt when something happens not only in his life, but also in his close and dear people.
The ancestor of the body therapy is considered to be Wilhelm Reich, who developed a whole technique for removing various muscle shells that are responsible for certain psychological problems. Muscle shells are just what interferes with breathing deeply or presses a whole mountain on the muscles of the neck and shoulders.
Alexander Lowen, based on the Reich technique, created his own bioenergetics, which allows the body to relax a tight and overloaded muscle group by adopting a particular posture that provides increased tension that cannot be sustained. In addition, he used the method of self-acceptance through looking at his own naked body.
Moshe Feldenkrais built his body therapy method on the principle that a civilized person often creates psychological problems due to the wrong habits and movements imposed by society and education. He promoted the principles of returning to natural movements and comfortable postures, which will influence mental health through the comfort of the body.
Matthias Alexander paid special attention to the spine, namely its maximum stretching. His method is still often used by actors, dancers and public figures.
Exercises Based on Body Therapy3
You can believe or not believe in the work of the theory of the connection between the body and the psyche, but its beauty lies in the fact that much can be applied in practice on your own, without the help of specialists and without the risk of harming yourself.
First of all, each of the mentioned techniques is based on the feeling of your body, but that it needs to be given the opportunity to relax. The vast majority of people do not even realize how many muscle groups they have in constant tension.
The first exercise is aimed at the general feeling of your body. Stand up straight with your legs spread comfortably and your arms are at your sides. On inhalation, imagine that you are being pulled by the crown, straighten as much as possible, stretching your spine and as if trying to grow up. As you exhale, relax as much as possible, leaving tension only in those muscles that do not allow you to fall, even bend your knees. Repeat the exercise several times until you feel its effect on your body.
You can literally drop the load from your shoulders by performing the following exercise in different versions: imagine that you are throwing someone else's hand off your shoulder, pushing an imaginary person, resting your hands on him, throwing the load back with your elbows, just like taking off a backpack. Repeat until the shoulders are warm. Put all your energy into the exercise, getting rid of unnecessary weight as intensively as possible. You can even pronounce auxiliary words aloud, such as "leave me alone," to enhance the therapeutic effect.
Try to feel how our face gets tired and how many facial muscles are in constant tension! Relax your jaw. A person clenches his teeth, showing stubbornness, struggling with difficulties, overcoming obstacles. Try to relax and massage your jaw muscles with your hands. At the same time, it is very easy to feel how the inner tension goes away.
Do you have expression lines? This is a sure sign that specific muscles are under tension. Massage them, smoothing from the wings of the nose to the ears, jaw muscles, palms from the chin to the ears, nasolabial folds, forehead. This is one of the most revealing examples, allowing you to feel the tension of a specific area of the body with a specific feeling. Massage intensively on the scalp, neck, shoulders. This is not only rewarding, but also very enjoyable and worth getting into a habit.
Pay attention to your hands, allowing them to relax completely in turn, shake and knead them. Shake and pull the brush separately, each finger. Massage and knead your entire body. Carefully rub each point on your feet, stopping on each toe. It is already recognized by official science that foot massage has a very positive effect on many internal organs. After a hard day, give your feet a bath, and then massage your feet with cream and you will feel that life is still wonderful, and fatigue and tension have been replaced by calm and relaxation.
Buy oils and creams for massage, make it a kind of ritual, especially after a hard day. In general, the time and effort devoted to your body will pay off very quickly. Literally after a few days of independent body therapy, you can feel a fruitful effect: irritation and tension will go away, calmness and peace will appear.
If you learn to listen carefully to the signals that the body gives during such self-massage, then believe me, there will be much less problems in life, a grateful body will bring the psyche into conformity.
Self-medication can be helpful4
Not everyone has the ability and desire to seek help from psychologists and body therapists. Someone does not believe in such things at all and prefers the traditional method - pills. It doesn't matter what worries: fatigue, insomnia, feeling unwell, or something else.
Before you run to the doctors and start taking pills with frequent stress, stress at work or school, heavy workload, try to find hidden reserves inside. You don't have to do almost anything for this, you will always have time to return to "plan A".
Our body is designed for much greater loads and shocks than we give it. We have survived in the process of evolution, which means that we are adapted to life without unnecessary drugs and medical help. Of course, when we are not talking about serious diseases.
Start in the morning! The benefits of charging are discussed from different points of view, let's look at it from the side of awakening the body. Should the car be warmed up in the morning before leaving the yard? This is how we will warm up our own body. Don't jump up right away! Allow yourself a few minutes of relaxed bliss under the covers. Stretch properly, stretching your spine, arms, and legs. Just feel your body from the top of your head to your toes. Have you noticed how carefully animals stretch? Let's take an example from cats! Charging is over, let's go to water procedures!
Pamper yourself with aromatic gels, massage your skin with a washcloth. A shower is not only a hygienic event. This is an opportunity to show your body how much you love it. The cream or oil will help prolong the pleasure and add a good mood.
Don't forget to help relax tired muscles throughout the day! A face, head and shoulder massage, done in just five minutes, will restore tone and help you feel a surge of vivacity. And don't forget about the slugs! Of course, it is not always possible, but it is very useful.
Remind your body constantly that you love it. Even if he has a belly and folds. It will definitely reciprocate you in the form of excellent health and excellent well-being. Let's remember the cats: many of them live to old age, never even having an acute respiratory disease in their lives!
By the way, another proof of the connection between the body and the psyche. Probably, everyone has at least once encountered such a phenomenon: he was driving from work tired and unhappy, a little cold or someone sneezed nearby, and that's it, a severe cold dumps at least a week. On another occasion, on a date with a loved one, they got caught in the rain, got wet to the skin, then walked for several hours in the wind, froze to the bone, and … Nothing! Didn't even sneeze. What is the reason for this? What strengthens or weakens the immune system? Is it possible to achieve such an effect by willpower? Can! Monitor your mood, do some simple body therapy exercises and be healthy!
